The work

What forestry mulching is

Forestry mulching takes standing brush and small timber down to chip and leaves it on the ground as cover. It is fast. It holds soil on a slope. It does not create a pile that anyone has to burn or haul.

On Grade LLC is based in Greencastle and runs forestry mulching as part of its land clearing and lot clearing work. The same crew and the same equipment do the clearing, the grading and the drive that follows it.

When mulching is the right job

Mulching suits ground that has gone back to brush, where you want it opened up and the material left on site as chip. It suits slopes, because the chip stays in place as cover. It suits ground that is not going to be built on.

Most clearing jobs are not a case of taking everything. There is usually a property line that matters, a septic field or a drive to protect, and trees the owner wants kept. We walk it and mark it first. Taking one more row than you were asked to is not something you can put back.

When mulching is the wrong job

Mulching does not remove roots. If the ground is going to carry a building, a drive or a finished lawn, the stumps and root mat have to come out. The holes then have to be filled and compacted. Mulch a build pad and you have bought yourself settlement.

If your job needs grubbing, we will tell you before the work starts. Then the cleared material has three honest answers: chip it and spread it, pile and burn it where the county and conditions allow, or haul it off. We agree which one it is before the first tree comes down, because it changes the price. Read more on land clearing cost per acre in Indiana.

FAQ

Forestry mulching questions

Does forestry mulching remove stumps and roots?

No. Forestry mulching takes standing brush and small timber down to chip and leaves it on the ground as cover. It does not remove roots. If the ground is going to carry a building, a drive or a finished lawn, the stumps and root mat have to come out and the holes have to be filled and compacted.

What happens to the material after mulching?

It stays on site as chip. That is the point of the method. The chip covers the ground and helps hold soil on a slope, and there is no pile left for anyone to deal with.

Can you mulch a lot that I am going to build on?

Mulching is fine for the parts of the lot that stay as ground cover. It is the wrong job for the build pad, the drive and the lawn area. Those need the stumps and root mat taken out first. We walk the lot and mark the line before any clearing starts.

Which areas do you cover for forestry mulching?

Putnam County and Hendricks County are the core area. That means Greencastle, Cloverdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore and Reelsville, plus Plainfield, Avon, Brownsburg, Danville and Pittsboro. On Grade also works in Boone County, including Zionsville.

How do I get a price for forestry mulching?

Call or text Travis with the address and what you want cleared. Most jobs need a look, because the price depends on the ground, the growth and the access. Estimates are free.
