Cost guide

Why there are no prices on this page

A gravel driveway price depends on length, width, how much base is already there and how far the stone has to be hauled. Nobody can give you a real number without seeing it.

So this page does not list dollar figures. It explains what moves the price up or down, so you know what you are being quoted for. On Grade LLC builds and regrades stone drives out of Greencastle. See driveway installation and finish grading for how the work is done.

What drives the cost of a gravel driveway

Size

Length and width set how much stone goes down and how long the machine is on site.

The base that is already there

A drive is the base under it. A drive that lasts starts by taking the topsoil and soft material out and getting down to something that will carry weight. Ground that already has a sound base needs less work than soft ground that has to be dug out first.

Material

Stone goes in as courses: a coarse base stone that locks together, then the surface stone on top. On the wet clay that runs through this part of Indiana, geotextile fabric between the subgrade and the stone is often the cheapest part of the job, and the one that decides how long it lasts.

Hauling

How far the stone has to travel is part of the price. So is what happens to the material that comes out. Soil that can stay on site costs less to deal with than soil that has to be trucked away.

Access

The width of the gate, where a truck can sit, what is in the way and how wet the ground is all change how the job runs. Wet ground stops excavation faster than anything else.

Drainage

A flat drive is a wet drive. The surface needs a crown or a steady cross-fall, and the ditch beside it has to carry the water somewhere. A drive that washes out is nearly always a drainage problem, not a stone problem. The fix can mean grading and a culvert or ditch. See drainage and culvert installation.

Permits and the road end

Where a drive meets a public road, the culvert and the apron are usually the county highway department's business. Anything that breaks ground is located through Indiana 811 first. That is two full working days' notice, and it is state law.

New drive, regrade or rebuild

These are three different jobs. A new drive is stripped, based and stoned from scratch. A regrade pulls the stone back to the crown and puts the fall back. A rebuild is needed when the base is gone.

Where the base is gone, more surface stone is a few months of relief and no more. It is worth being told that, not sold another load.

How On Grade quotes a driveway

Travis takes the calls, looks at the ground and prices the job. A number from somebody who has stood on the site is worth more than one read off a list. Estimates are free.

It helps to send the address, roughly what you are trying to do, and when you need it. Photographs of the ground and of the way in are worth more than a long description.

On Grade is based in Greencastle and works across Putnam County, Hendricks County and east into Indianapolis.

FAQ

Driveway cost questions

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Indiana?

It depends on length, width, how much base is already there and how far the stone has to be hauled. Nobody can give you a real number without seeing it. Call and we will look.

Can you price a driveway from photographs?

Sometimes. Where a job is straightforward enough to quote from photographs and a description, we will say so and save everybody the visit. Most jobs need a look.

Is another load of stone the cheapest fix for a rutted drive?

Not usually. A drive that has gone soft has often lost its shape, or the base has been contaminated with the clay underneath. Where the base is gone, more surface stone is a few months of relief and no more.

Who decides the culvert where my drive meets the road?

Where a drive meets a public road, the culvert and the apron are usually the county highway department's business. The pipe has to be the right size and set at the right invert, or it holds water instead of moving it.
