Site preparation, foundation and basement excavation, driveways, drainage, land and lot clearing, ponds, demolition and finish grading — the full list, everywhere in Putnam County.
Home ground
Putnam County is where the equipment sits overnight, which changes what is worth doing. A half-day job in Greencastle, Cloverdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore or Reelsville is a job we can take, where a contractor coming out from Indianapolis has to price an hour each way into it before he has moved a bucket. Small drives, single culverts, a wet corner of a yard and a pad for a pole barn are all normal work here rather than something to be fitted in.
What the ground is like
Putnam County sits toward the western edge of the glacial till plain and the ground varies more than it does further east. There is clay-heavy till that holds water and seals a pond well, and there is ground where limestone comes up closer to the surface than anyone would like — the county has been quarried for it for well over a century. That difference matters on a basement dig and it matters on a pond, so it is worth knowing which one you are on before the price is set.
Farm ground and rural work
Much of the county is working farmland, and that brings its own list: field entrances that have to carry loaded grain trucks, lanes that wash out every spring, drainage tile that was laid generations ago and is failing quietly, ponds, and pads for machine sheds. Old tile is the one to watch — it is rarely mapped, it is still doing a job, and cutting one without repairing it puts water into somebody's field.

Do you work in Indianapolis, or only around Greencastle?
Both. On Grade is based in Greencastle and works east through Hendricks and Boone counties into Indianapolis and Marion County. Call with the address and you will get a straight answer on whether it is a job worth mobilising for.
Do you do commercial work as well as residential?
Yes. Pads, parking, drainage and mass grading for commercial and industrial sites, alongside the residential site prep, driveways and pond work.
Do you clear lots and brush, or only full land clearing?
Both. Lot clearing for a build, brush clearing on ground that has gone over, and forestry mulching where you want the material left on site as chip.
Can you fix a driveway that washes out every spring?
Usually. A drive that washes is nearly always a drainage problem rather than a stone problem — the water has nowhere to go, so it goes down the drive. That means grade and a culvert or ditch, not just more rock.
How soon can you start?
It depends on weather and what is already on the schedule. Wet ground stops excavation faster than anything else. Call and ask — we will tell you the real timeline, not the one you want to hear.
