The work

What this actually involves

New stone drives, regrading washed-out drives, and the finish grade that decides whether water runs off or sits.

A drive is the base under it

Stone spread over soft ground disappears into it within a season, and every load after that is money spent hiding the same problem. A drive that lasts starts by taking the topsoil and soft material out, getting down to something that will carry weight, and building back up in courses — a coarse base stone that keys together and locks, then the surface stone on top. On the wet clay that runs through this part of Indiana, geotextile fabric between subgrade and stone is often the cheapest part of the job and the one that decides how long it lasts.

Crown, fall and where the water goes

A flat drive is a wet drive. The surface needs a crown or a consistent cross-fall so water leaves it instead of standing and working its way down into the base, and the ditch or shoulder alongside has to actually carry that water somewhere. Where a drive meets a public road the culvert and the apron are usually the county highway department's business, and the pipe has to be the right size and set at the right invert or it holds water instead of moving it.

Rutted, washed and potholed drives

A drive that has gone soft is usually not short of stone — it has lost its shape, or the base has been contaminated with the clay underneath, or the water that used to leave it now runs down it. Regrading pulls the material back to the crown and re-establishes the fall. Where the base is gone, more surface stone is a few months of relief and no more, and it is worth being told that rather than sold another load.

Cost

What a gravel driveway costs

Length, width, the base that is already there, hauling, access and drainage all move the price. This guide explains each one and how On Grade quotes a drive.

How much does a gravel driveway cost?

It depends on length, width, how much base is already there and how far the stone has to be hauled. Nobody can give you a real number without seeing it. Call and we will look.

Can you fix a driveway that washes out every spring?

Usually. A drive that washes is nearly always a drainage problem rather than a stone problem — the water has nowhere to go, so it goes down the drive. That means grade and a culvert or ditch, not just more rock.

Do you work in Indianapolis, or only around Greencastle?

Both. On Grade is based in Greencastle and works east through Hendricks and Boone counties into Indianapolis and Marion County. Call with the address and you will get a straight answer on whether it is a job worth mobilising for.
