Who Do I Call to Clear Land in Indiana?

For clearing ground to build on, open up acreage or take back brush, call a land clearing contractor with machines, not a crew with saws alone. A tree service fits single trees over a house or a line; a clearing contractor fits ground.

Tree service, clearing contractor or mulcher

Search for land clearing in Indiana and the first page is mostly tree services. They are the right people for a big tree leaning over a roof, a limb over a power line or a careful removal in a tight yard, where the work is climbing, rigging and lowering pieces. The job is the tree.

A land clearing contractor works with ground. The job is an area: a building envelope, a field edge, a lane, an overgrown lot. It is done with excavators, dozers, skid steers and forestry mulchers, and it usually ends with the ground ready for whatever comes next, whether that is a foundation, a pad, a drive or grass. A forestry mulching outfit specialises in grinding brush and small timber in place. Many clearing contractors, On Grade included, do both clearing and mulching and the earthwork afterward.

Is land clearing worth it

It is one of the most common questions behind a clearing search, and the honest answer depends on the goal. If you are building, there is no choice about clearing the envelope; the only decision is how much more to take. Keeping mature trees outside the work area costs nothing later and adds shade and privacy.

If the land has simply grown over, clearing is usually worth it sooner rather than later. Brush gets thicker and saplings become trees every season, so the job only grows. Cleared ground is usable again for pasture, a garden, a barn or just walking, and it is easier to see and look after. Where nothing is being built, forestry mulching is often the lighter option. Our mulching vs. clearing guide compares the two.

What to ask before you hire

Ask what happens to the material. Chip left on site, piles burned where the local rules allow, or everything hauled off are all real options, and the answer changes the job. Ask whether the roots come out, because a building site needs them out and a pasture may not. Ask what the ground will look like when they leave: rough, graded or seeded.

Ask who calls Indiana 811 and when, since grubbing stumps is digging and the law requires at least two full working days' notice. Ask how they mark what stays: trees, a well, a drain, a property line. And ask who you will be talking to while the job runs. At On Grade that is Travis, who walks the ground before giving a price.

Permits and offices to check

Clearing land is not always a permit question on its own, but it often becomes one. A building lot is usually tied to a building permit and site plan from the town or county planning office. Once land disturbance reaches an acre or more, IDEM's construction stormwater general permit applies. Ground beside a regulated drain brings in the county surveyor, and land near a stream or floodway can involve the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Burning has its own local rules. Ask the office that covers your parcel before you plan anything, and do not rely on anyone telling you nothing is needed. The land clearing permits guide sets out who to ask about what.

Getting a useful quote

Clearing prices are hard to give over the phone because most of what moves them is on the ground: how dense the growth is, how big the trees are, whether the roots come out, where the material goes, how wet and steep the ground is, and how a machine gets in. A contractor who has walked the site can price those honestly.

You can speed it up. Send the address, a rough outline of the area on an aerial map, photos of the thickest part and of the way in, and a sentence on what the ground is for. That is enough to tell whether a visit is needed and what to look at when it happens. The land clearing cost guide explains the price factors in full.

Where On Grade clears land

On Grade is based in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana, and clears land across Putnam, Hendricks and Boone counties and the west side of Indianapolis: building lots, overgrown acreage, fence rows, access lanes and pasture. The same crew can take the job on to the next stage, from topsoil stripping and pads to drives, drainage and seed, so the cleared ground is not left waiting for someone else.

The Short Version

  • Call a tree service for single trees over structures; call a clearing contractor for ground.
  • Clearing is worth it when the land has a use; brush only gets thicker with time.
  • Ask about roots, material, 811 and what the ground looks like at the end.
  • Check with the planning office, county surveyor and IDEM where they apply.
  • Photos and an outlined aerial speed up an honest quote.

Quick Answers

Where can I find land clearing services in Indiana?

Look for contractors who list land clearing, lot clearing or forestry mulching as earthwork, not only tree removal. On Grade clears land across Putnam County, Indiana, Hendricks and Boone counties and west Indianapolis. Call (317) 203-8928.

Should I hire a tree service or an excavator to clear my lot?

For a building lot or overgrown acreage, an excavation and clearing contractor is usually the better fit, because the job ends with the ground prepared. A tree service suits individual trees near a house or lines where climbing and rigging are needed.

Does clearing land add value to a property in Indiana?

Usable land generally beats land you cannot get into, and a lot ready to build is easier to plan and sell. Mature trees can add value too, so selective clearing that keeps the good ones often makes the most sense. A local real estate professional can speak to your market.
