Whether the ground will hold water at all

The first question on any pond is whether the soil will seal. Clay-rich till holds well and much of central Indiana has it; sand, gravel seams or fractured rock will not hold without help. That is worth testing before the dig rather than discovering it when the pond drops six feet over a dry August. Where natural clay is short, a clay liner keyed into the bottom and sides is the usual answer, and it has to be placed and compacted properly or it leaks at the seams.

Shape, depth and the watershed feeding it

A pond is only as good as the water coming into it. Too small a watershed and it never fills; too large and you are building a spillway to handle storm flow. Depth matters for the same reason — shallow water warms, weeds and goes green, so a pond meant to hold fish needs real depth over a decent share of its area. Banks want a gradual shelf at the edge for safety and a steeper break below it to discourage weed growth.

Spoil, overflow and the finished edge

A pond dig produces a lot of material and hauling it away is usually the most expensive thing you can do with it. Used on site it becomes a pad, a berm, a raised drive or a levelled paddock. Every pond also needs a designed way to let water out in a storm — an emergency spillway cut and stabilised so overflow leaves across grass rather than over the dam. Banks get shaped, topsoiled and seeded so they hold instead of sliding in the first heavy rain.
