The work
What this actually involves
The last pass: shaping topsoil, seed and straw, and leaving the ground looking like nobody dug it up.
The pass that decides what the job looks like
Finish grading is the last thing done and the first thing anybody sees. It is shaping the topsoil back out to consistent depth, breaking up what the machines compacted, and setting the final contours so water leaves the building and the drive rather than pooling against them. Grade set here is permanent in practice — nobody regrades a finished lawn — so it is worth getting the fall right before any seed goes down.

Seed, straw and actually getting germination
Seed needs contact with loose soil, not a compacted crust, which is why the ground gets worked before it gets sown rather than seed being thrown over whatever the tracks left. Straw or blanket holds seed and moisture in place and stops the first storm moving it to the bottom of the slope. Timing matters in Indiana: spring and late summer into early autumn are the windows that work, and seed sown into July heat or December ground mostly gets paid for twice.
Slopes, swales and erosion that has already started
Steeper ground and drainage swales need more than seed and straw — blanket pinned down, or stone where water will concentrate and run. Where erosion has already cut a channel, filling it and seeding over the top just gives the water the same route again; the reason it concentrated there has to change. On sites still under a Rule 5 permit the controls stay in and maintained until the ground is genuinely stabilised.
This page covers the finish grade, seed and straw. For cutting and shaping the ground before that, see site grading; for a yard in Boone County, see yard grading in Zionsville.

A look at the ground

Questions about this work.
Not seeing yours? Call or text (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Do you work in Indianapolis, or only around Greencastle?
Both. On Grade is based in Greencastle and works east through Hendricks and Boone counties into Indianapolis and Marion County. Call with the address and you will get a straight answer on whether it is a job worth mobilising for.
How soon can you start?
It depends on weather and what is already on the schedule. Wet ground stops excavation faster than anything else. Call and ask — we will tell you the real timeline, not the one you want to hear.
Can you fix a driveway that washes out every spring?
Usually. A drive that washes is nearly always a drainage problem rather than a stone problem — the water has nowhere to go, so it goes down the drive. That means grade and a culvert or ditch, not just more rock.
