Snow removal across Central Indiana

What a winter looks like here

Central Indiana gets a few real snows most winters and a lot more ice than depth. Freezing rain, a thaw in the afternoon and a hard refreeze overnight cause more trouble than any single storm. A lot that was plowed clean at six in the morning can be glazed again by evening. So snow removal here is two jobs: moving the snow when it falls, and dealing with the ice that follows. A plan that only covers the first one leaves a property owner exposed for most of the season.

Public roads are somebody else's job. INDOT plows I-70, I-74, US 40, US 36 and the state routes. The county highway departments in Putnam, Hendricks and Boone plow the county roads, the towns plow their own streets, and Indianapolis plows city streets. Everything off the public road belongs to the owner: the drive, the lot, the walks and the private lane. That is the work On Grade does.

Commercial lots and seasonal contracts

For businesses, churches, HOAs and property managers, the work is set out in a contract before the season. It names the trigger depth, where the property sits on the route, whether salt is included, and who clears the walks. Those details are agreed in writing before the snow. The commercial snow removal contracts page goes through seasonal, per-push, per-event and time-and-materials agreements and what each one means for the owner when the winter is heavy or light.

The plowing itself is about the order of things: entrances and drive lanes open first, then parking rows, then loading docks and the back of the building. Piles go where the site map says, away from drains and sight lines. There is more on how that works on commercial snow plowing for parking lots, including how curbs and islands get marked before the ground freezes.

Salt, ice and the walks

Ice is where the real liability sits. A few inches of snow slows people down. A thin glaze they cannot see puts them on the ground. Ice also comes back night after night during a thaw, long after the plow has gone. Salting and ice management covers pre-treating ahead of freezing rain, treating after the plow, and going back out when meltwater refreezes overnight. The property owner decides whether salting is part of every visit or called for separately.

Walks, entrances, steps and ramps are slower, closer work than a lot, and they are where people actually walk. Sidewalk snow removal covers the routes into the building, accessible parking and ramps, and business frontage. On a commercial site the walks are usually written into the same contract as the lot, so the two are done on the same visit and nobody is waiting on another crew.

Hauling, stacking and driveways

After a big storm, or late in a winter that keeps adding to the piles, a lot can simply run out of room. The piles creep into parking spaces and drive lanes. On Grade loads them with the skid steer and either stacks them higher in a corner of the site or trucks them off. Snow hauling and relocation explains when each one makes sense and how it is usually billed.

For homeowners, driveway snow plowing covers house drives in town, subdivision drives, long rural gravel drives and private lanes. On Grade builds gravel drives as well as plowing them, so the plowing is set up to leave the stone on the drive. Homeowners can choose a seasonal agreement or pay per push, and the driveway page explains the difference. Shared lanes can be set up under one agreement.

Set it up before the first storm

The time to arrange snow removal is in the fall, while the ground is still bare. Travis walks the property, marks curb lines, islands, drains, light pole bases and the edges of drives, and agrees where the piles go. Damage that is already there, cracked curbs and torn sod, gets noted and photographed so nobody argues about it in March. Contracts signed before the first snow get a place on the route.

If you are comparing quotes, the snow removal contract guide lays out the four common ways contracts are priced, the questions worth asking any contractor, and what should be in writing. It has no prices in it, because every lot is different. Call Travis with the address and what needs clearing, and he will tell you how he would set it up.

Questions about snow work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you plow residential driveways or only commercial lots?

Both. On Grade plows house drives, subdivision drives, long gravel drives and private lanes as well as commercial lots, church lots, HOA common areas and industrial yards. Homeowners can set up a seasonal agreement or pay per push. Commercial properties usually work from a written seasonal or per-event contract that sets the trigger depth, the scope and the order on the route.

What area do you cover for snow removal?

On Grade is based in Greencastle in Putnam County and works east through Hendricks County and Boone County to the west side of Indianapolis in Marion County. That takes in towns like Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg, Danville, Zionsville and Whitestown. Call with the address and Travis will tell you whether it fits the route.

When should I sign up for snow removal?

Before the first real snow. The route is built from the properties signed up before the season, and those properties get their place on it. Signing early also leaves time for Travis to walk the site, mark curbs and drive edges while the ground is bare, and agree on where the piles go. Calling in the middle of a storm means waiting behind the contract customers.

Does the town or county plow my road?

Usually, yes. INDOT handles the interstates and state and US routes, the county highway department plows county roads, towns plow their own streets and Indianapolis plows city streets. Private lanes, driveways, parking lots and private walks are the owner's responsibility. The town plow also leaves a ridge of snow across the end of the drive, which is part of what a driveway visit clears.

Is salting included with plowing?

It depends on how the agreement is written, and it is the owner's choice. Some contracts include salt on every visit, some list it as a separate charge each time it is spread, and some call for it only when ice is expected. The contract should say which, so there is no surprise on the bill and no confusion on an icy morning about whether the lot was supposed to be treated.
