In Putnam County

A land clearing contractor based in Greencastle

On Grade LLC does land clearing in Greencastle and across Putnam County, Indiana. We are based in Greencastle, the county seat, and the equipment stays in the county at night. There is no long haul from Indianapolis built into a clearing job here.

That matters most on the smaller jobs. An overgrown back corner or a short track into a few acres can be a half-day job. Close to home that is a job we can take.

Clearing is one of the services on our land clearing, lot clearing and forestry mulching page. This page is about how that work runs in our own county.

The work

The clearing we get called for here

Lots for a house or a barn

A build needs more than the trees down. The house site, the drive and the lawn area have to be cleared and grubbed, with stumps and roots taken out. The rest of the lot can often stay as it is. We mark the line with you before a tree is touched.

Ground that has gone back to brush

Pasture edges, old lots and the backs of rural properties that have grown over. If nothing is going to be built there, this is usually a mulching job. See forestry mulching in Putnam and Hendricks County.

A way in

Rural acreage, like much of the ground around Reelsville, often needs an access track before anything else can happen. We clear the route, cut it in and stone it, so the next truck can reach the site.

Lake and rural properties

Around Cloverdale there are lake properties and long rural drives as well as the ground along I-70. Close to a house or a neighbour's line, the clearing is done to a marked line and no further.

The ground

What Putnam County ground does to a clearing job

Three things about the ground here change how clearing gets planned.

Clay that holds water

Much of the county is clay-heavy till. It stays wet after rain and machines rut it. Sometimes the honest answer is to wait for drier ground. We will say so on the phone, before anyone drives out.

Limestone near the surface

In parts of the county limestone is not far down. That affects how stumps come out and what a build site is like once it is grubbed. It is worth knowing before a price is set.

Farm ground and old tile

A lot of Putnam County is working farmland. Grubbing stumps along the edge of a field can find drainage tile that was never mapped. If we cut one, it is repaired or rerouted, because it is still carrying water for somebody.

Rules

Rules worth knowing before you clear

Clearing that disturbs an acre or more comes under Indiana's Rule 5 stormwater requirements. The erosion controls have to be in and working first.

Burning has rules too. Indiana's environmental agency, IDEM, regulates open burning, and burning for land clearing can need its approval in advance. Local rules and burn bans can be tighter than the state's. Check with the county and your local fire department before planning on a burn pile. The other two answers are chipping the material and leaving it on site, or hauling it away.

Anything that breaks ground, grubbing included, is located through Indiana 811 first.

What comes next

After the clearing

Clearing is rarely the last step. The same crew can build the building pad or pole barn pad, put in the gravel driveway and seed the bare ground when the work is finished. You deal with one contractor from the first tree to the final grade.

For what moves the price, read land clearing cost per acre in Indiana. It carries no dollar figures, because no two acres are the same job.

We clear land in Greencastle, Cloverdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore, Roachdale and Reelsville, and on rural ground between them. See the Putnam County page for the rest of what we do here.
