Land Clearing Cost per Acre in Indiana

What moves the price of clearing an acre up or down, and how On Grade quotes it. No price list, because no two acres are the same job.

Why there are no prices on this page

Two one-acre lots can be very different jobs. One is light brush on open, dry ground. The other is standing timber on a wet slope with one narrow way in. A flat per-acre price would be wrong for both.

So this page does not list dollar figures. It explains what moves the price, so you know what you are being quoted for. On Grade LLC does land clearing, lot clearing and forestry mulching out of Greencastle.

What drives land clearing cost per acre

Size, and where the line is

Most clearing jobs are not a case of taking everything. There is a build envelope, a septic field or a drive to protect, trees the owner wants kept, and a property line that matters. We walk it and mark it first. The area inside that line is what gets priced.

How dense the growth is

Brush and small timber come down faster than mature trees. Heavier growth means more machine time and more material to deal with on every acre.

Mulching or grubbing

Forestry mulching takes brush and small timber down to chip and leaves it on the ground. It is fast, but it does not remove roots. If the ground is going to carry a building, a drive or a finished lawn, the stumps and root mat have to come out and the holes have to be filled and compacted. See forestry mulching in Putnam and Hendricks County.

What happens to the material

There are three honest answers: chip it and spread it, pile and burn it where the county and conditions allow, or haul it off. Hauling adds trucking. Burying stumps on site is not an answer. Buried wood rots and the ground above it drops.

Access and ground conditions

The width of the gate, where a truck can sit and how wet the ground is all change how the job runs. Wet ground stops this kind of work faster than anything else.

Drainage and erosion control

Bare ground moves when it rains. Water has to have somewhere to go from the first day the ground is open. On a slope that can mean seed and straw or blanket once the clearing is done. See seeding and site restoration.

Permits

Any site disturbing an acre or more falls under Indiana's Rule 5 stormwater requirements. The controls need to be in and working before the disturbance. Burning depends on the county and the conditions.

What the ground is for changes the job

Clearing for pasture or a view is one job. Clearing for a house is another. On a build site the clearing is the first step of site preparation, and the pad has to be free of roots before any fill goes in.

Tell us what the ground will be used for. It decides which parts can be mulched and which parts have to be grubbed.

How On Grade quotes land clearing

Travis takes the calls, looks at the ground and prices the job. Looking at it in person is the only honest way to price most groundwork. Estimates are free.

On Grade is based in Greencastle and clears land across Putnam County, Hendricks County and east into Indianapolis.

FAQ

Land clearing cost questions

How much does land clearing cost per acre in Indiana?

There is no single per-acre figure that holds from one site to the next. The price depends on how much is growing there, how it is cleared, what happens to the material and how the machines get in. Travis looks at the ground and gives you a number. Estimates are free.

Is forestry mulching priced the same as full clearing?

No. They are not the same job. Forestry mulching leaves the chip on site and does not remove roots. Clearing for a building, a drive or a lawn means taking out stumps and root mat, then filling and compacting the holes.

Why does it matter what happens to the cleared material?

Because it changes the price. The material can be chipped and spread, piled and burned where the county and conditions allow, or hauled off. We agree which one it is before the first tree comes down.

Does clearing an acre or more need a permit?

Any site disturbing an acre or more falls under Indiana's Rule 5 stormwater requirements. The erosion controls need to be in and working before the ground is disturbed.
