Gravel driveway installation from a Greencastle crew

On Grade LLC builds gravel driveways in Greencastle and across Putnam County, Indiana. We are based in Greencastle and this is home ground. New house drives, farm lanes, field entrances and the stone in front of a barn are all regular jobs.

The method is on our driveway installation and finish grading page. This page covers what is different about building a drive here: the ground, the kinds of drive people need, and who looks after the road end.

The work

The drives we build in Putnam County

House drives

From a short drive on a lot in Greencastle to a long one back to a house on acreage. Long gravel drives are common on the farm ground around Bainbridge, and length is the first thing that sets how much stone a job needs.

Farm lanes and field entrances

Much of the county is farmed. A field entrance that carries loaded grain trucks is built heavier than a house drive. Tell us what will be driving on it.

Barn and shop access

A drive to a pole barn usually ends in an apron in front of the doors and room to turn a trailer. We build those along with the drive, and the pad for the building too if it is not there yet.

Tracks into wooded ground

Where the route is through trees, it is cleared and cut in first and then stoned. See land clearing in Greencastle and Putnam County.

Construction entrances

On a new build, a stone entrance goes in early so concrete and lumber trucks can get on and off the site. It often becomes the base of the finished drive.

The ground

Building a drive on Putnam County ground

Clay-heavy till covers a lot of this county. It holds water and it goes soft. A drive laid straight onto it loses its stone into the clay. So the topsoil and soft material come off first, down to ground that will carry weight.

The stone then goes down in two courses. The lower one is a coarse stone that locks together. The top one is the surface you drive on. On wet clay we often put geotextile fabric under the base to keep the clay out of it.

Not all of the county is the same. In places limestone is close to the surface, which can mean firm ground sooner than expected. We find out what is there when the topsoil comes off, and we tell you what we found.

The finished drive is shaped with a crown or a steady fall to one side, and the ditch beside it is left able to carry the water away.

The road end

Where the drive meets a county road or state highway

The first few feet of a drive sit in the road right of way. That part is not only yours to decide.

On a county road, the Putnam County Highway Department is the office to ask about a new entrance and the pipe under it. Call before any stone or pipe is ordered.

US 231, US 40, US 36 and the numbered state roads belong to the state. A new entrance onto one of those needs a driveway permit from INDOT, and so does changing an entrance that is already there. The permit has to be approved before work starts in the state right of way.

Inside Greencastle, ask the city about a drive that opens onto a city street. Our driveway culvert guide goes through all of this in more detail.

Repairs and price

Old drives, and how a drive gets priced

If you already have a drive and it is rutted or washing, that is a different job. See gravel driveway repair and regrading.

Travis looks at the ground and prices the job. Estimates are free. The length, the base that is there, how far the stone has to come and what the road end needs all move the number. Our gravel driveway cost in Indiana guide explains each one, with no dollar figures.

We build drives in Greencastle, Cloverdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore, Roachdale and Reelsville. The Putnam County page lists everything else we do here.

FAQ

Gravel driveway questions in Putnam County

Do you install gravel driveways in Greencastle?

Yes. On Grade LLC is based in Greencastle and builds gravel driveways in town and across Putnam County, Indiana. That includes house drives, farm lanes, field entrances and stone aprons in front of barns and shops.

Do I need a permit for a new driveway entrance in Putnam County?

Ask before you build. On a county road, check with the Putnam County Highway Department. On a US route or a state road, a driveway permit from INDOT is needed before any work in the state right of way. Inside Greencastle, ask the city.

Do you put fabric under a gravel driveway?

Often, yes. On wet clay, geotextile fabric between the ground and the base stone keeps the clay from working up into the stone. It is a small part of the job and it helps the drive last.

Can a gravel drive carry farm trucks and equipment?

Yes, if it is built for them. A field entrance for loaded grain trucks needs a heavier build than a house drive. Tell us what will use it before we price it.

Which Putnam County towns do you build driveways in?

Greencastle, Cloverdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore, Roachdale and Reelsville, and the rural roads between them.
