Concrete Removal in Brownsburg, IN
In Brownsburg the concrete that needs to go ranges from a 1950s garage slab behind a house near Green Street to a driveway in a subdivision that is barely twenty years old. Travis breaks it out, hauls it off and leaves a compacted base or a graded, seeded yard.

Concrete removal in Brownsburg
The old grid and the new subdivisions need different work
Brownsburg was a small town for a long time. It had about 1,600 people in 1950, then grew to 4,500 by 1960, doubled again between 1990 and 2000, and passed 28,000 in 2020. The streets around Green Street and Main Street still carry the older houses, and the subdivisions wrap around them on every side.
So two kinds of concrete come out here. In the old part of town it is thick garage slabs, sectioned driveways and walks that have been patched for sixty years. In the subdivisions it is driveways, builder patios and front walks that settled or heaved in the first twenty winters.
A detached garage slab behind an older house
The job that is most particular to Brownsburg's older streets is the slab left behind when a detached garage comes down. These were often poured thick, with a footing around the edge and sometimes a second slab on top of the first. They do not come out with a jackhammer in an afternoon.
Travis breaks the slab with the excavator into pieces it can lift, pulls the footing from below grade and loads everything on the trailer. If the garage itself is still standing, it comes down first as part of demolition in Brownsburg. Then the hole is filled and graded, or the base is compacted for a new slab.
Fill near White Lick Creek
White Lick Creek runs north to south through Brownsburg, just west of the center of town. Lots along it sit on bottom ground, and part of that ground is mapped floodplain. Pulling a slab out leaves a void that has to be filled, and in a floodplain the amount and placement of fill can be regulated.
Before any fill is brought in to a lot near the creek, check the property on the Indiana DNR floodplain portal and ask the Town of Brownsburg. Away from the creek, on the higher ground where most of the town sits, the void is simply filled with clean material, compacted and graded off.
Why the slab rose and cracked in the first place
Most of Brownsburg sits on glacial till. On the flats it is Crosby clay, which the USDA rates somewhat poorly drained with a perched water table in the top two feet through winter and spring. On the slopes toward the creek it is Miami soil, better drained but still clay underneath.
Concrete poured on wet clay with no stone under it gets lifted by frost every winter. That is why old drives in town are in plates and why newer ones have a step at the garage. A compacted stone base under the replacement, with somewhere for the water to go, is the part that stops it happening again. The concrete removal and demolition guide goes into more detail.
Permits: in Brownsburg a patio needs one
Brownsburg's Building and Inspections office lists a patio or deck among the small projects that require a permit, so if a new patio is going in where the old one came out, apply through the town's permit portal before the concrete crew is booked. Town Hall is at 61 North Green Street. A demolition of a garage or shed should be asked about there too.
Before the excavator digs under the slab, the utilities are located through Indiana 811. The law gives them two full working days to mark, and On Grade files the ticket. The Indiana 811 guide covers what gets marked and what does not.
What the job costs and where it ends
Travis comes out, looks at the concrete, checks how thick it is and whether there is a footing, and gives one number with hauling and the finish in it. Estimates are free. An old in-town slab and a new subdivision patio can be the same size and cost quite different amounts, which is why he looks before he quotes.
On Grade prepares and compacts bases but does not pour concrete. If the old drive is becoming gravel instead, that is gravel driveway work in Brownsburg and the same crew does it in the same visit. The concrete preparation and demolition page and the Brownsburg page cover the rest.

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Do you remove old garage slabs in Brownsburg?
Yes. The thick slabs behind older houses in town, with the footing around the edge, are broken out with the excavator, pulled from below grade and hauled off. If the garage is still standing it comes down first, and the hole is filled and graded afterward.
Do I need a permit for a new patio in Brownsburg?
Yes. The town's Building and Inspections office lists a patio or deck among the small projects that need a permit. Apply through the town's permit portal, or call Town Hall on North Green Street, before the concrete crew is booked.
My lot is near White Lick Creek. Does that change anything?
It can. Lots along the creek sit on bottom ground, and part of it is mapped floodplain where fill is regulated. Check the Indiana DNR floodplain portal and ask the town before fill is brought in to the hole where the slab was.
Will you pour the new concrete?
No. On Grade breaks out the old concrete, hauls it off and builds and compacts the stone base to the height your concrete contractor asks for. The pour is their job, and the base work is timed to their date.
Why has my driveway got a step at the garage?
The clay backfilled around the foundation when the house was built keeps settling, and the drive poured over it drops with it. Frost in the wet Crosby clay under most of Brownsburg lifts the rest. A compacted stone base under the new drive stops both.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
