Concrete Removal in Plainfield, IN
Plainfield calls about driveways that have heaved at the garage, patios that tip toward the house and old slabs behind homes along US-40. Travis breaks the concrete out, loads it, hauls it off and leaves a compacted base or a graded yard, whichever comes next.

Concrete removal in Plainfield
Plainfield's first wave of subdivisions is due for new concrete
Plainfield sits on US-40, the old National Road, with I-70 along its south edge and the Indianapolis airport right next door. The town had about 5,500 people in 1960 and close to 35,000 by 2020. Most of that growth came as subdivisions, and the earliest of them are now fifty years old.
That is where the concrete work comes from. Driveways poured in the 1970s and 1980s have cracked into plates and settled at the garage apron. Patios have sunk on the house side. Closer to Main Street, older lots carry garage slabs and walks that nobody has touched in decades.
The usual job: a driveway out, a base ready for the concrete crew
The most common call in Plainfield is a driveway replacement. The homeowner has a concrete contractor lined up for the new pour and needs the old drive gone first. Travis breaks it up with the excavator, loads the pieces and hauls them away, including the apron and any wire or rebar in it.
Then the base gets built, not just scraped. Loose dirt comes out, stone goes in and it is compacted to the height the concrete crew asks for. On Grade prepares and compacts bases but does not pour concrete, so the pour is the next crew's job. The concrete preparation and demolition page covers the rest of that work.
Why the old slab moved in the first place
Plainfield is on the Central Till Plain, and the ground under most lots is glacial clay. Crosby soils are common on this kind of ground and the USDA rates them somewhat poorly drained, with a perched water table in the top two feet through winter and spring. Water sitting under a slab freezes, lifts it and drops it again every year.
A thin slab poured straight on that clay does not last. Taking the old one out is the chance to fix the cause: pull the wet clay, set a compacted stone base and give the surface somewhere to shed water. Otherwise the new drive follows the old one.
Working inside a fenced subdivision yard
A back patio in a Plainfield subdivision usually means a gate, a side yard a few feet wide and a neighbor's fence close by. The mini excavator goes through most gates, and the skid steer carries the broken concrete out to the truck at the street. Lawn that gets tracked is graded back at the end.
Out front, the work is simpler. The driveway is the access, so the excavator works from the drive itself and loads straight into the truck. The street stays clear for the neighbors, and the apron is swept when the last load leaves.
Locates, permits and the creek side of town
Anything that digs below the slab is located through Indiana 811 first. Indiana law requires at least two full working days' notice before digging, and On Grade files the ticket. The Indiana 811 guide explains how it works. Old drives sometimes hide a gas or water service nobody drew.
Development Services at the Town of Plainfield issues building and demolition permits. Call Town Hall on West Main Street before a date is fixed if a structure is coming down with the slab. White Lick Creek runs down the west side of town and Clark's Creek down the east, so a lot near either should be checked on the Indiana DNR floodplain portal before any fill comes in.
What it costs and what comes after
Travis comes out, measures the concrete, looks at the thickness and what is under it, and gives one figure. Hauling and disposal are in it, and so is the base or the grading at the end. Estimates are free, and a photo of the slab ahead of time helps.
Afterwards the ground is either compacted for the pour or filled, graded and ready for seed. If a slab had a shed on it, see demolition in Plainfield. If the old drive is going to gravel instead of new concrete, see gravel driveways in Plainfield. For the rest of the work in town, see the Plainfield page.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Do you pour the new driveway in Plainfield as well?
No. On Grade breaks out the old concrete, hauls it off and builds and compacts the stone base. A concrete contractor does the pour. The base work can be timed to the day the concrete crew is coming, so the hole is not open for long.
Do I need a permit to remove a driveway or patio in Plainfield?
Taking out a flat slab usually does not need one, but a structure coming down with it may. Development Services at the Town of Plainfield issues building and demolition permits, so call them before a date is fixed.
Can you get a machine into my back yard?
In most Plainfield subdivisions, yes. The mini excavator fits through a standard gate and the broken concrete is carried out with the skid steer. The gate, the side yard and the fences all get looked at during the estimate.
Why did my driveway crack and heave?
Most of Plainfield sits on glacial clay that holds water. Crosby soils, common here, have a perched water table near the surface in winter and spring. Water under the slab freezes and lifts it. A compacted stone base under the new pour is the fix.
Where does the broken concrete go?
It is loaded on the trailer and hauled off the property the same day it comes out. Disposal is included in the one figure you get at the estimate, so there is no second bill for the hauling and nothing left in a pile on the drive.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
