Concrete Removal in Terre Haute, IN

Terre Haute has more old concrete per lot than any other town On Grade works in: garage slabs off the alley, ribbon driveways, footings from buildings long gone. Travis breaks it out, hauls it off and leaves the lot graded for grass, a new slab or whatever comes next.

Concrete removal in Terre Haute

An older city with more concrete than it uses

Terre Haute peaked at close to 72,000 people in 1960, when the mills, distilleries and plants were running, and had about 58,000 in 2020. The houses from those decades are still here. So are their garages, their slabs and their driveways, and the 2020 census counted roughly one housing unit in seven standing empty.

That is where the work comes from. A lot changes hands and the buyer wants the collapsing garage and its slab gone. A rental near the university needs a driveway that is not in pieces. A family wants the concrete pad from a long-gone shed out of the back yard so the kids can use it.

Clearing a lot: slab, footings, ribbon drive and all

The Terre Haute version of this job is rarely one slab. An older lot often carries a garage slab at the alley, a pair of concrete strips running up from the street, a front walk, a stoop and the footing of something that was torn down decades ago and never dug out.

Travis takes all of it in one visit. The excavator breaks the slab, pulls the footings from below grade and lifts the strips. Everything goes on the trailer and off the property. Then the lot is filled where it needs to be, graded off and left ready for seed or for a builder. If a standing garage has to come down first, that is demolition in Terre Haute.

River bottom on the west, clay on the east

The Wabash River is Terre Haute's western edge, and the low bluffs on the east side of the city mark the edge of its historic floodplain. Lost Creek drains the north side of town and Honey Creek the south. Where the ground is low, the water table is close and an old slab may be sitting in wet sand and silt.

On the higher ground east of the bluffs it is glacial clay, and frost is what breaks the concrete. Either way, what goes under the new slab matters more than what came out. Travis compacts a stone base for the concrete crew, or fills and grades the void so it does not become a low spot that holds water.

Alleys make the access easier

Most of Terre Haute's older neighborhoods are laid out on a grid with alleys, which is a help. A garage slab or a back-yard pad can be reached from the alley without crossing the front lawn or the neighbor's drive. The excavator comes in behind the house and the trailer loads in the alley.

The city asks that street and alley closures be requested through Public Works, so if the trailer will block an alley for a day, that gets arranged first. On narrower lots without alley access, the mini excavator goes through the side yard and the skid steer carries the pieces out.

Permits, locates and the public sidewalk

Inside the city, the Building Inspection division of the Terre Haute Engineering Department inspects construction and works with owners on buildings that have to be repaired or demolished, and permits are applied for through the city's online permit portal. Outside the city limits, the Vigo County Building Inspections office issues building and demolition permits. Ask the right one before a date is fixed.

The public sidewalk in front of a house is the city's business, handled through Public Works, so it is not broken out as part of a private job without asking. Anything that digs is located through Indiana 811 first, with the two full working days' notice the law requires. On Grade files the ticket.

What it costs from Greencastle

Terre Haute is forty minutes down US-40 from On Grade's base, and the price reflects a full day's work, not a trip charge. Travis comes out, looks at how much concrete there is and how thick, and gives one figure with the hauling and the grading in it. Estimates are free.

The base gets compacted for the concrete crew, but the pour itself is theirs; On Grade does not pour concrete. If the strips are coming out for a gravel drive instead, see gravel driveways in Terre Haute. The concrete preparation and demolition page and the Terre Haute page cover the rest.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you clear whole lots in Terre Haute, not just one slab?

Yes. Older lots here often carry a garage slab, ribbon driveway strips, a walk, a stoop and old footings. All of it comes out in one visit, is hauled off, and the lot is filled, graded and left ready for seed or a builder.

Who do I ask about a demolition permit in Terre Haute?

Inside the city, the Building Inspection division of the Terre Haute Engineering Department, through the city's online permit portal. Outside the city limits, the Vigo County Building Inspections office issues building and demolition permits. Ask before a date is fixed.

Can you take out the sidewalk in front of my house?

The public sidewalk is the city's, handled through Terre Haute Public Works, so it is not broken out as part of a private job without asking them first. Private walks, stoops and driveway aprons on your own lot are no problem.

Is Terre Haute too far from Greencastle for a small job?

It is about forty minutes down US-40, and a slab removal is usually a full day's work anyway. Travis prices the job as a whole, hauling included, rather than adding a trip charge. Combining the concrete with a garage tear-down or grading in the same visit makes the trip worth more.

Why does the ground near the river matter?

West of the bluffs is the Wabash floodplain, where the water table is close and fill can be regulated. Check the Indiana DNR floodplain portal before fill goes into the hole where the slab was. East of the bluffs the ground is clay and frost is the issue.
