Concrete Removal in Avon, IN

Avon's houses are not old, but a lot of the concrete around them has already settled, cracked or simply got too small. Travis breaks out driveways, patios, walks and slabs in Avon, hauls the pieces away and leaves a compacted base for the concrete crew or a graded yard for seed.

Concrete removal in Avon

A young town with thirty-year-old driveways

Avon only became a town in 1995. It had about 6,200 people in 2000 and more than 21,000 by 2020, strung along US-36 between Danville and the Indianapolis line. Almost everything here is a subdivision, and the first ones are now about thirty years old.

That is the concrete that comes out. A driveway poured in the 1990s has had thirty winters on it. Front walks have dropped a step at the porch. Builder patios, often a thin slab the size of a grill, are cracked or too small for how the family uses the yard now.

The common Avon job: a small patio out, a bigger one coming

More calls in Avon are about making room than about ruin. The old patio comes out so a larger one, a pool deck or a sunroom can go in. The front walk comes out so it can be widened. A side slab goes so a garage can be extended.

Travis breaks the slab, loads it and hauls it off, then builds the base the next crew needs. Stone goes in, gets compacted in lifts and is left at the height the concrete contractor asks for. On Grade prepares bases but does not pour concrete. The concrete preparation and demolition page explains where the work starts and stops.

Why a new house's concrete settles

When a house is built, the trench around the foundation is backfilled with the clay that came out of it. That fill keeps settling for years. A driveway or walk poured over it drops at the garage and the porch, which is exactly where most Avon driveways have failed.

The ground itself does not help. Avon sits on flat glacial till, and the Crosby and Brookston soils common across this part of Hendricks County are rated somewhat poorly to poorly drained by the USDA. Water sits under the slab and freezes. A properly compacted stone base, not loose clay, is what keeps the replacement from doing the same thing.

Getting into an Avon back yard

Subdivision lots in Avon are close together, and the back yard is usually behind a vinyl fence with one gate. The mini excavator goes through a standard gate. The skid steer carries the broken concrete out across the side yard to the truck, and the tracks are graded smooth once the last piece is gone.

A patio next to the house also means a patio next to the siding, the air conditioner and the basement window wells. The machine works away from the house and the pieces are lifted, not dragged. If the lawn gets torn, it is raked out and seeded at the end.

Locates, the Building Department and the HOA

Anything that digs is located through Indiana 811 first, and the law gives the utilities two full working days to mark. On Grade files that ticket. The gas and electric to a house often run right under the front walk, which is one more reason the pieces are lifted carefully.

The Town of Avon Building Department on East US-36 issues building and fence permits. Pulling a slab rarely needs one, but what replaces it might, so ask them before the concrete crew is booked. Many Avon subdivisions also have a homeowners association with its own rules on patios and fences, and that approval is yours to get.

One figure, hauling included

Travis comes out, looks at the concrete and what is under it, and gives you one number with the hauling and the base or grading in it. Estimates are free. Thickness matters more than area, so a slab with a footing or a double layer gets priced on the ground, not off a photograph.

If the slab had a shed or carport on it, that comes down too, under demolition in Avon. If water was part of why the patio sank, yard drainage in Avon can be fixed in the same visit. The rest of the work in town is on the Avon page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Settled driveways. Drives that dropped at the garage broken out, hauled off and re-based with compacted stone.
  • Builder patios. Small or cracked slabs removed to make room for a bigger patio, pool deck or addition.
  • Walks and steps. Front walks and porch steps taken out and the ground left ready for the new pour.
  • Slabs under sheds. Shed, carport and garage slabs removed with the footings beneath them.

The same concrete work runs in the towns on either side of Avon. Concrete removal in Plainfield, to the south, deals with older subdivisions along US-40, and concrete removal in Brownsburg covers the north end of the county. All three are inside the territory On Grade covers from Greencastle, described on the Hendricks County page. Danville and the rural ground west of Avon are the same trip.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Can you remove a patio in an Avon subdivision without wrecking the yard?

Yes. The mini excavator fits through a standard gate and the broken concrete is carried out with the skid steer rather than dragged. Any ruts across the side yard are graded smooth and seeded before the crew leaves.

Do you prepare the base for a new driveway in Avon?

Yes. After the old drive is out, loose clay is removed, stone is placed and compacted, and the base is left at the height your concrete contractor asks for. On Grade does not pour concrete; a concrete crew does that part.

Why did my driveway drop at the garage?

The clay backfilled around a new foundation keeps settling for years, and a driveway poured over it drops with it. The flat, slow-draining till under Avon adds frost heave on top. A compacted stone base under the new pour is the fix.

Do I need a permit from the Town of Avon?

Removing a flat slab usually does not need one. What replaces it might, so check with the Avon Building Department on East US-36 before the concrete crew is booked. If you have a homeowners association, check its rules on patios and fences as well.

How soon can the concrete crew pour after you leave?

As soon as they want. The base is compacted and ready when the crew leaves, so the removal can be scheduled a day or two ahead of the pour. Tell Travis the concrete contractor's date and the base work is timed to it.
