Concrete Removal in Greencastle, IN

Greencastle concrete has had a lot of winters. Driveways in the older neighborhoods have heaved and cracked, patios have tipped toward the house, and farm slabs sit where nothing stands anymore. Travis breaks it out, hauls it and leaves either a graded hole or a compacted base ready for a concrete crew.

Concrete removal in Greencastle

Old concrete in an old town

Greencastle was founded in 1821 and has three historic neighborhoods on the National Register. A lot of the driveways, walks and patios around them were poured decades ago, and Putnam County clay has been working on them ever since. Clay holds water, water freezes, and the slab lifts and cracks a little more each year.

On Grade is based here, so this is the concrete Travis sees most: a cracked drive off a street near DePauw, a patio that has settled against the foundation, a set of steps that has pulled away from the porch. Each one is broken out, loaded and hauled, and the ground is left usable.

Driveways and approaches

A driveway is the biggest and most common tear-out. The excavator breaks the slab into pieces the skid steer can load, the pieces go in the trailer, and the old base under it is checked. On older Greencastle drives the base is often thin or missing, which is part of why the slab failed.

What happens next is your call. Travis can strip to firm ground, bring in stone and compact a flat base for a concrete crew to pour on. Or the drive can become a gravel drive on the same compacted base, which is common on the longer lots outside town.

Patios, walks and steps

A patio that has settled toward the house is sending water at the foundation every time it rains. It comes out, the fill under it is compacted properly this time, and the ground is graded to fall away from the house. If a new patio is going in, the base is prepared for the pour.

Sidewalks and steps are smaller, and the mini excavator handles them without tearing up the yard. Porch steps are often tied to a footing that goes deeper than people expect, and that comes out too, so nothing is left to trip over or hit later.

Farm slabs, footings and old block

On the county roads around Greencastle there are slabs where barns and milk houses stood, block foundations with nothing on them, and footings under ground that nobody can see until a machine finds them. If the building is gone and the slab is in the way of a new pad or a field, it comes out, footings included.

If a building is still standing on it, that is demolition in Greencastle, and the slab goes with the building in the same job. Either way the hole is filled in lifts and compacted so it does not settle into a dip.

What the material is, and where it goes

The cost of concrete removal is mostly in what happens to the material rather than in breaking it. Clean concrete can sometimes be crushed and reused on site as fill or base. Concrete with rebar, wire mesh, asphalt or tile has to be sorted and hauled. Travis looks at what the slab is made of before he gives a number, so the disposal is in the figure and not a surprise.

Before anything is broken, Indiana 811 has to be notified at least two full working days ahead; that is Indiana law for any excavation. A slab next to the house can have a gas or water line under it. A guide to concrete removal and demolition in Indiana explains what to expect.

A base, a hole or a lawn

On Grade prepares and compacts bases but does not pour concrete. So when the old slab is gone, you get one of three things: a compacted stone base, screeded flat, ready for the concrete crew; a filled, graded spot ready for gravel; or a filled, graded spot ready for seed. If the ground was wet, yard drainage in Greencastle can be fixed while it is open.

The price is one figure with breaking, hauling and the base or grading in it, after a free look. The concrete prep and demolition page covers the full service, and the Greencastle page covers the rest of the work On Grade does at home.

What it includes

What that covers

Greencastle is home base, so the same concrete tear-out work runs east to Hendricks County for concrete removal in Plainfield, Avon and Brownsburg, and west down US-40 to Terre Haute. The Putnam County roads to Cloverdale, Fillmore and Bainbridge are covered from here, and so are the farm slabs along them. The Greencastle excavation page has the rest of the work done in town.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you remove concrete driveways in Greencastle?

Yes. The slab is broken into pieces with the excavator, loaded with the skid steer and hauled. The base is then stripped and compacted for a concrete crew to pour on, or built up as a gravel drive. Travis looks at the drive first and gives you one figure with the hauling in it.

Do you pour the new concrete too?

No. On Grade prepares and compacts the base so the pour is flat and the right depth, but a concrete crew does the pour. If you already have a concrete contractor, Travis works to what they want under the slab.

Why does old concrete in Greencastle crack so much?

Putnam County soil is glacial clay that holds water. The water freezes in winter and lifts the slab, and it drops back in spring. Over enough years the slab cracks and heaves, especially where the base underneath was thin. A properly compacted stone base is what prevents it next time.

Can you take out the footings under old steps or a barn slab?

Yes. Footings go deeper than people expect, and they come out with the slab so nothing is left to hit later. The hole is filled in lifts and compacted so it does not settle into a dip.

Do I need to call 811 for a patio tear-out?

Yes. Indiana law requires notice to Indiana 811 at least two full working days before any excavation, and a slab beside the house can have a gas, water or electric line under it. Travis handles the locate before the machine arrives.
