Demolition and Removal in Brazil, IN

Brazil is an old coal-and-clay town on the National Road, and it had more people in 1910 than it does today. The streets are full of buildings that outlived their use. Travis takes down the garages, sheds, barns and mobile homes that people in Clay County call about, and leaves the ground graded.

Demolition in Brazil

An old coal town on the National Road

Brazil has been the Clay County seat since 1876, and US-40, the old National Road, runs right past the courthouse. The town grew with the coal companies in the 1860s and peaked at about 9,300 people in 1910. It has about 8,200 now, and roughly one house in eleven stood vacant at the last census.

That history leaves a particular kind of property: narrow lots with a house from the mining years, a garage added later, a shed added after that. On Grade passes through Brazil on every run to Terre Haute, so it is an easy stop from Greencastle.

Garages and sheds behind the old houses

The single most common job here is a detached garage that has leaned past the point of fixing. Block or brick foundation, a thin slab or none, a roof that has let water in for a decade. It comes down with a mini excavator, the material is loaded and hauled, and the foundation comes out if you want the spot clear.

Sheds, coal houses and lean-tos are the small version of the same job. Travis will tell you whether the trailer and skid steer can take care of it in a morning, or whether the excavator needs to come.

Barns and mobile homes on the rural lots

Outside the city limits, Clay County is farm ground and wooded parcels, and the calls change: a barn with the roof gone, a machine shed, a mobile home that has sat empty since the last tenant. The barn is pulled down, the tin and lumber sorted and hauled, and the footings dug out.

A mobile home is stripped, broken down and loaded, piers, skirting and steps included. The utility disconnects power and gas first, and the septic line is capped. Hauling is most of the cost, so Travis walks it before he prices it.

Old ground and old surprises

Lots in a town this old have been built on more than once. Under a garage there is sometimes an older foundation, a cistern, a coal chute or a filled well. Travis watches for that as the floor comes out, and anything found is dealt with rather than buried again.

The soil is clay and it holds water, so the hole where a foundation came out is filled in lifts, compacted and graded with a fall. Leaving it to settle on its own gives you a low spot by next spring. If the lot was wet to begin with, the drainage can be fixed while the machine is there.

Indiana 811 and the City of Brazil

Indiana 811 has to be notified at least two full working days before any excavation or demolition, and Indiana law requires it. Old garages in Brazil often still have a line run from the house, and old farm sites have lines nobody remembers.

Inside the city limits, ask the City of Brazil's Planning and Zoning office what it wants before a date is fixed. Outside the limits, ask Clay County. IDEM exempts a noncommercial house of four or fewer units from its asbestos inspection and notification; a commercial building is not exempt. Travis will say when he looks if a house needs abatement, because that is not work he takes on.

What the lot gets used for

A cleared garage spot by the alley becomes parking on a compacted gravel base. A barn spot gets cut and compacted as a new pole barn pad if that is the plan. A mobile home spot goes back to grass. Any slab or walk left on the lot can be broken out and hauled on the same trip.

You get one number for tear-down, hauling and grading together, after a free look at the lot. The demolition page covers the whole service, and the Brazil page covers the rest of the work On Grade does in Clay County.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Leaning garages. Old detached garages taken down with a mini excavator, foundation out, spot filled.
  • Barns and sheds. Pulled down on rural Clay County lots, tin sorted from lumber, footings dug out.

  • Decks and pools. Above-ground pools and rotten decks removed and the yard graded back.
Brazil and nearby

Brazil and the towns nearby

Brazil is on the road between Greencastle and Terre Haute, so the crew is through here often. The same demolition work goes west to Terre Haute and east to Greencastle, and the Putnam County roads around Reelsville and Cloverdale are covered on the way. The Brazil excavation page covers everything else On Grade does here, and the service-area page shows the full reach.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you take down old garages in Brazil?

Yes. A leaning detached garage behind an older house is the most common call here. It comes down with a mini excavator, the material is hauled, and the block or brick foundation comes out if you want the spot clear. The hole is filled and compacted.

Who do I ask about a demolition permit in Brazil?

Inside the city limits it is the City of Brazil's Planning and Zoning office; ask there what the city wants before a date is fixed. Outside the limits, ask Clay County. Indiana 811 has to have at least two full working days' notice before any digging or demolition.

Can you remove a mobile home on a rural lot in Clay County?

Yes. The home is stripped, broken down and hauled, piers, skirting and steps too. Power and gas have to be disconnected by the utility first and the septic line capped. You get one figure with the hauling in it after Travis has seen it.

What if there is something under the garage floor?

On lots this old there sometimes is: an older foundation, a cistern or a filled well. Travis watches for it as the floor comes out and deals with what is found rather than burying it again. If it changes the job, you hear about it before the work goes on.

Is Brazil in your regular service area?

Yes. On Grade is based in Greencastle and runs to Terre Haute down US-40, so Brazil is on the way. Estimates are free, and the trip is one he makes anyway.
