Demolition and Removal in Avon, IN

Avon was not a town until 1995, and nearly everything in it was built since. The first generation of decks, above-ground pools and backyard sheds is now worn out, and people want them gone before the next project. Travis takes them out, hauls the debris and grades the clay flat again.

Demolition in Avon

A town that is thirty years old

Avon incorporated in 1995 along US-36, west of the Marion County line. It had about 6,200 people in 2000, doubled by 2010 and reached about 21,500 in 2020. Almost all of it is subdivisions built since 1990 on flat farm ground, with Brownsburg to the north, Danville to the west and Plainfield to the south.

Demolition in a town this young is rarely a barn. It is the deck that came with the house in 1998, the pool put in when the kids were small, the shed from the big-box store that has rusted through. Small things, but they still have to be broken down, loaded and hauled, and the ground still has to be fixed after.

Decks, pools and the backyard you want back

The usual call in Avon is a deck and a pool together. Pressure-treated decks from the 1990s have posts set in concrete, and the concrete comes out of the ground with the post. The pool wall is cut apart, the liner and sand are stripped, and the pile goes on the trailer in a day.

What people actually want is a yard with nothing in it, graded so it can take a patio, a new deck or just grass. Travis grades the spot to meet the lawn around it, so you are not looking at a dip where the pool was.

Working on a small lot

Avon lots are not large, and the houses sit close. A mini excavator gets through most side yards and gates, and a skid steer runs the debris out to the street. Where the gap between houses is too narrow, the fence or a section of it comes out for the day.

Travis walks the route before he quotes anything, and he checks what the neighbors have on the other side of the fence. Machines on wet clay leave ruts, so the day is picked for the ground as much as for the calendar.

Flat clay that holds water

Hendricks County is low rolling ground given over to farming and houses, and Avon is one of the flattest parts of it. The soil is glacial clay. Water sits where it lands, and a pool or slab that comes out leaves a hole that fills with the first storm.

So the fill goes in, it is compacted in lifts, and the surface is graded with a slight fall toward the lot line or a drain. A lot of Avon yards already had a wet corner before the pool went in, and yard drainage in Avon is work Travis can do while the machine is on site.

Locates and the Town of Avon

Indiana 811 has to be notified at least two full working days before any digging or demolition, and that is Indiana law, not a courtesy. The pool pump and any shed power run from the house also have to be disconnected before a machine touches them.

Ask the Town of Avon Building Department before a date is fixed whether your building needs a demolition permit. Most backyard sheds and decks are small, but a detached garage or a structure on a slab is a different question. Subdivisions here often have a homeowners' association too, and it is worth checking what yours wants to see.

What goes in its place

A pool spot is a good place for a patio, and a patio needs a compacted stone base, which Travis prepares for a concrete crew to pour. A garage slab that stays cracked can come out too; concrete removal in Avon is the same machine on the same visit. A side-yard parking strip can become a gravel drive.

One figure covers the tear-down, the hauling and the grading, after a free look at the yard. The demolition and concrete prep page describes the full service and the Avon page covers the rest of the work here.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Decks and posts. Pulled down whole, with the concrete footings dug out rather than left in the lawn.
  • Above-ground pools. Wall cut apart, liner and sand stripped, the circle filled and graded.
  • Sheds and playsets. Metal, resin or wood, broken down and loaded through the side yard.
  • Small slabs. Shed pads and patio slabs broken out, hauled and the base left flat.

Avon and the towns nearby

Avon sits in the middle of the Hendricks County suburbs, and the same demolition work goes next door: demolition in Plainfield to the south, Brownsburg to the north and Danville out US-36 to the west. The Avon excavation page covers everything else On Grade does in town, and the service-area page shows how far the crew travels from Greencastle, which is about half an hour away.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you take out decks and above-ground pools in Avon?

Yes, and usually together. The deck comes down with the excavator, the posts and their concrete footings are dug out, the pool is cut apart and stripped, and the whole pile is hauled. The circle is filled, compacted and brought up level with the grass around it.

Can you get through a subdivision side yard?

A mini excavator fits through most side yards and standard gates, and a skid steer carries the debris to the trailer at the street. If the gap is too narrow a fence section comes down for the day. Travis checks the route when he comes to look.

Do I need a permit from the Town of Avon?

Ask the Town of Avon Building Department before a date is fixed. A small shed and a detached garage may get different answers. Indiana 811 must be notified at least two full working days ahead in every case, and your homeowners' association may have its own rules.

Will the yard be left level?

Yes. Avon ground is flat glacial clay that holds water, so the hole is filled and compacted in lifts and the surface is graded with a slight fall. If the yard already held water, Travis can deal with the drainage on the same visit.

Can you put in a patio base where the pool was?

Travis can strip the spot, bring in stone and compact a flat base ready for a concrete crew to pour. The pour itself is the concrete crew's job, not On Grade's.
