Demolition and Removal in Danville, IN

Danville is the Hendricks County seat, with a courthouse square, old streets around it and farm parcels not far past the last subdivision. The demolition calls are garages behind the old houses and barns on the edge of town. Travis takes them down and leaves the ground ready for what is next.

Demolition in Danville

County-seat streets and the garages behind them

Danville was laid out in 1824 and has been the county seat ever since. US-36 is Main Street, and the blocks around the courthouse square are on the National Register. The houses there are old, and so are the garages, sheds and summer kitchens behind them.

A garage built for one narrow car, on a brick or block foundation, leaning toward the alley, is the single most common thing Travis is asked to remove in Danville. It comes down with a mini excavator, the slab or footings come out if you want, and the pile is hauled.

Barns on the edge of town

Danville grew from about 6,400 people in 2000 to about 10,600 in 2020, and the new neighborhoods have pushed out onto farm ground on every side. Where that happens, the farmstead buildings are in the way: a bank barn, a corn crib, a pole shed with the tin gone.

The excavator pulls the structure down and the material is sorted and loaded. If the property is being split and a house is going on the spot, Travis can go straight on to stripping and grading the site so the builder is not waiting.

Carports, sheds and lean-tos

Not everything that comes down is a building. A metal carport bolted to a slab, a lean-to off the side of a shed, a chicken house, a dog run with a concrete floor: all of it is a half-day job, and the cost is mostly in the hauling.

Travis will say up front whether something is worth bringing the excavator for, or whether the skid steer and trailer can handle it. Small jobs get folded in with others nearby when that makes the price better for you, and the carport slab can come out on the same trip if you want the spot clear.

Ground that rises west of town

Hendricks County is low rolling ground, and its highest point is a mile and a half west of Danville. The West Fork of White Lick Creek runs through the east side of town. So lots here can slope more than people expect for this county, and the soil is still clay that holds water.

On a sloping lot, the hole where footings came out is filled and compacted so it does not settle and turn into a low spot. The grade is shaped so the water runs past the house and not toward it. If it already runs toward it, yard drainage in Danville is the next job.

Locates, the Town of Danville and asbestos

Nothing is dug or pulled down until Indiana 811 has had at least two full working days' notice, which Indiana law requires. Power, gas and water to the building are disconnected by the utility before the machine goes near it.

Inside the town limits, the Town of Danville Building Department handles building permits and inspections, so ask there before a date is fixed. Outside the limits, ask Hendricks County. IDEM exempts a noncommercial house of four or fewer units from its asbestos inspection and notification, but not a commercial building. Houses that need abatement are not work Travis takes on, and he will tell you if that is what he sees.

What the spot becomes

A garage spot by the alley often becomes parking, and a gravel pad goes in on the compacted base. A barn spot becomes a pole barn pad or a lawn. A slab that stays cracked can be broken out and hauled on the same visit, and the base left compacted for whatever goes there next.

You get one price with tear-down, hauling and grading all in it, after a free look at the lot. The demolition and concrete prep page covers the whole service, and the Danville page covers the rest of the work On Grade does here.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Alley garages. Old one-car garages taken down in tight lots, foundation and slab out if wanted.
  • Barns and cribs. Farmstead buildings pulled down ahead of a new house or a split lot.
  • Carports and sheds. Metal carports, lean-tos and small outbuildings unbolted, broken down and hauled.
  • Decks and pools. Above-ground pools and worn-out decks removed and the yard graded back.

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Do you tear down old garages in Danville?

Yes. A narrow one-car garage behind an older house near the square is the most common call here. It comes down with a mini excavator that fits down the alley, the foundation and slab can come out too, and the pile is hauled off.

Who issues demolition permits in Danville?

Inside the town limits, ask the Town of Danville Building Department before a date is fixed. Outside the limits it is Hendricks County. Indiana 811 must be notified at least two full working days before anything is dug or pulled down.

Can you take down a barn before a house is built on the lot?

Yes. The barn is pulled down, sorted and hauled, and the footings come out so the builder does not hit them. Travis can then strip and grade the site, so one crew takes the lot from old barn to ready for the builder.

What happens to the hole where the footings were?

It is filled and compacted so it does not settle. Lots around Danville slope more than most of Hendricks County, so the grade is shaped to carry water past the house rather than into the low spot.

Is there an asbestos check?

A noncommercial residential building with four or fewer units is exempt from IDEM's asbestos inspection and notification. A commercial building needs a licensed inspection and notice to IDEM before work. On Grade does not take on houses that need abatement, and Travis will tell you if that is what he sees.
