Demolition and Removal in Greencastle, IN
Greencastle is home base for On Grade. Most calls here are about a barn on a farm road that has stopped being safe, or a garage behind an older house near the square that leans a little more every winter. Travis takes it down, hauls it off and leaves the ground graded so you can use it.

Demolition in Greencastle
Home base, and the old buildings that come with it
Greencastle is the Putnam County seat, about halfway between Indianapolis and Terre Haute off I-70, and it has not grown much in fifty years. The 2020 census counted fewer people than 2010. So the demolition work here is not new subdivisions pushing into farm ground. It is older property being sorted out.
That means a detached garage behind a house that was built before anyone owned two cars. A tobacco barn or a machine shed on a farm that has been split up. A mobile home at the back of a rural lot that nobody has lived in for years. On Grade is based here, so Travis can usually come look the same week.
Barns and outbuildings on the county roads
Drive any road out of town and you pass a barn with the roof going. Once the roof goes, the rest follows within a few winters, and by then it is not worth saving. The excavator pulls it down in a controlled way, the metal is separated from the wood, and everything is loaded and hauled.
The concrete under it comes out too if you want it gone: the slab, the footings, the old stanchions. Or the pad stays and gets cleaned up for a new pole barn in the same spot, which is often the best building site on the place anyway.
A garage in a tight in-town lot
The older neighborhoods around DePauw and the square have narrow lots, alley access and garages that were built for a Model A. Taking one down is mostly about not hurting what is next to it. A mini excavator fits down an alley or between houses where the big machine cannot.
Travis looks at the lot first and decides which machine goes in and which way the debris comes out. Fences, a neighbor's garage three feet away, a sidewalk you want to keep: all of that is sorted before the first wall comes down.
Rolling ground down to Big Walnut Creek
Putnam County is flat in the north and rolls more the further south and west you go. Around Greencastle the ground falls toward Big Walnut Creek, and the soil is glacial clay that holds water. Tear a building off a slope and leave a hole, and the hole fills.
So the last step is grading. The void where the footings were is filled and compacted, and the ground is shaped so water runs away from the house and off the site. If the lot already had a wet spot, that is the time to deal with it, and yard drainage in Greencastle is work Travis does anyway.
Locates, permits and the asbestos question
Indiana law requires a call to Indiana 811 at least two full working days before any excavation or demolition. Utilities to the building have to be disconnected by the utility first, and old farm buildings sometimes still have a live line nobody remembers.
Inside the city limits, call the City of Greencastle before a date is fixed and ask what it wants for a demolition. Outside the limits it is Putnam County. IDEM's asbestos rules exempt a noncommercial house of four or fewer units, but a commercial building or anything being converted to business use needs a licensed asbestos inspection and a notice to IDEM first. Travis says so when he looks, and he does not take on houses that need abatement.
What happens after
Once the building is gone, you have a bare patch of ground and a choice. Travis can grade it, seed it and leave it as yard. He can build a compacted pad where the barn stood. He can put in a gravel drive to it. If there is more concrete to come up, concrete removal in Greencastle is the same crew and the same trip.
The price is one figure with the hauling and the grading in it, after a free look at the ground. The demolition and concrete prep page covers the whole service, and the Greencastle page covers everything else On Grade does at home.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Do I need a permit to tear down a garage in Greencastle?
Call the City of Greencastle before a date is fixed and ask what it wants for a demolition inside the city limits. Outside the limits, ask Putnam County. Either way, Indiana 811 has to be called at least two full working days before anything is dug or pulled down.
Can you take down an old barn on a farm outside Greencastle?
Yes. Barns, machine sheds and other outbuildings are the most common demolition call in Putnam County. The excavator pulls it down, the material is sorted and hauled, and the slab or footings can come out at the same time. Travis looks at it first and gives you one figure.
What about asbestos?
IDEM exempts a noncommercial residential building with four or fewer units from the asbestos inspection and notification. A commercial building, or anything being converted to business use, needs a licensed inspection and a notice to IDEM before work starts. On Grade does not take on houses that need abatement, and Travis will say so when he looks.
Will you remove the concrete slab under the building?
Yes, if you want it gone. The slab and the footings below ground come out with the building, and the hole is filled and compacted. If you plan to build on the same spot, the slab can stay and be cleaned up instead, or a new pad can be prepared.
What does the ground look like when you leave?
Graded, filled where the footings were, and shaped so water runs off. On Putnam County clay that last step matters. Travis can seed it, build a pad or put in a gravel drive, depending on what you want to do with the spot.
