Snow Removal and Plowing in Avon, IN
Avon grew from a crossroads on US 36 into one of the fastest-growing towns in Indiana, and almost all of it is subdivisions on flat clay. Snow removal here means HOA entrances and private streets, business lots along US 36 and Avon Avenue, and drives on the acreage lots the neighborhoods left behind. Travis plows, salts and hauls on all three.

Snow removal in Avon
Flat clay and where the melt goes
Hendricks County is low rolling till, and the Avon end of it is about as flat as it gets. That matters in winter more than people expect. A pile of snow on a flat lot melts in the afternoon and the water has nowhere to go, so it spreads across the pavement and freezes again overnight. The worst ice in an Avon parking lot is usually a thin sheet beside the pile, in the spot where people park and walk.
So the pile spots are chosen before the first storm, on bare pavement, where the melt runs toward a storm inlet or off the pavement onto grass. The inlets themselves are marked so the plow does not bury them. On a flat lot that one decision does more against ice than any amount of salt spread across the lot after the fact.
HOA entrances and private streets
Most of Avon lives in a subdivision with a homeowners association. The town plows public streets. What the HOA owns is the HOA's to clear: the entrance, the common drives, the mailbox clusters, the paths around the pond and, in some neighborhoods, the streets themselves where they were never handed to the town. The plat and the HOA documents say which streets are public. Travis asks for them before he prices the job.
The board decides the important things: the trigger depth that sends the plow out, whether the entrance and mailbox clusters are salted every time, and what happens to the windrow the town plow leaves across the entrance. Those go into one seasonal contract, written so the board can point residents to it. The commercial snow removal contracts page explains how an agreement like that is set up.
Lots along US 36
US 36 through Avon, and Avon Avenue, which used to be SR 267, are lined with strip centers, restaurants, offices, medical buildings and churches. Each one has a lot to clear, walks to salt and an opening time. A restaurant lot needs the drive lanes open before the lunch crowd, an office before the workday starts, a church before the first service. The route is planned around those times, which are written into the agreement up front.
Busy lots along a state route also deal with the ridge the road plow leaves across the entrance, and with slush thrown up from the highway. The entrances get a second pass after the road is plowed, and the salt goes where cars turn in and where people cross from the lot to the door. Curbs and islands are marked in the fall so the plow can find them.
The acreage around the neighborhoods
Not all of Avon is a cul-de-sac. The farmhouse on a parcel that was never sold, the acreage lots on the county roads north and west of town, and the lane back to a new pole barn are all still here. Those drives are longer and often gravel, and they drift where the wind comes across a field and meets the first row of houses. A short concrete drive in a subdivision is a quick push. A lane to a barn is a longer job.
On a gravel lane the plow rides a little high so the stone stays on the drive, and the edges are staked before the ground freezes. The apron at the barn doors gets pushed wide enough to swing a truck and trailer in. Homeowners on those lots can call when it snows or sign up for the whole winter on one agreement.
Salting, hauling and the season
Central Indiana sees a few real snows most winters and more ice than snow, and freezing rain is a bigger problem in Avon than depth. The contract says when salt goes down: with every plowing, only when there is ice, or when the owner asks. It also says where: entrances, drive lanes, walks and steps. A board or a property manager can change those areas later, but it is easier to set them in the fall.
When a lot runs out of room, the piles are loaded out with the skid steer and hauled to an agreed spot on the site or off it. On a flat Avon lot that also moves the melt away from where it would have refrozen. The snow removal and plowing across central Indiana page covers the whole service, including sidewalks, residential drives and seasonal contracts.

Does the Town of Avon plow HOA streets?
The town plows the public streets, the ones that were dedicated to it. A street the HOA still owns, and the entrance, common drives and mailbox clusters, are the association's responsibility. The plat and the HOA documents say which is which, and Travis asks for them before he prices the job.
What trigger depth should an Avon HOA choose?
The board decides, based on what residents expect and what the budget allows. A low trigger means the plow comes out for lighter snows and the streets stay clearer. A higher one means fewer trips. Ice is a separate decision, because a light glaze can be worse than a real snow. Both go in the contract in plain words.
Why does my parking lot ice over after it has been plowed?
On flat ground the melt from the piles has nowhere to go. It spreads across the pavement in the afternoon and freezes overnight, usually right where people park. Piling snow where the melt runs to an inlet or onto grass, and keeping the inlets open, cuts most of that. Salt on the walking areas handles the rest.
Can a gravel drive on an acreage lot near Avon be plowed?
Yes. The plow is set to ride a little above the stone so the surface stays on the drive, the edges are staked before the ground freezes, and the apron at the barn or shop is pushed wide enough to turn a trailer. A homeowner can call when it snows or put the drive on a seasonal agreement.
Is the windrow at the end of my drive part of the job?
It can be. When the town plow passes, it leaves a ridge of heavy snow across every drive and entrance, and that ridge is the owner's to clear. A contract can include a second pass after the street is plowed. It is worth deciding at the start, because the windrow is often the heaviest snow of the storm.
