Snow Plowing and Salting in Danville, IN

Danville is the Hendricks County seat, with a courthouse square on US 36, older streets around it, newer neighborhoods at the edges and farm ground beyond. It rolls more than the towns to the east, so drives here climb and turn. Travis plows and salts sloped drives, farm lanes, church and business lots and county-road acreage, about twenty-five minutes from the Greencastle shop.

Snow removal in Danville

Drives that climb

Hendricks County is low rolling ground, and around Danville the rolls are big enough to matter. The highest ground in the county is a mile and a half west of the square. A drive that climbs from the road to a house, or drops to one, is the drive that ices first. Plow it clean and the sun melts what is left at the edges, the water runs down the grade, and by morning there is a sheet of ice across the bottom.

So the slope is treated, not just plowed. Salt goes on the grade, the curve and the flat at the road where the car has to stop. The snow is pushed to the low side or off the downhill end, not left at the top where its melt will run across the drive every afternoon. A homeowner can call when it snows or put the drive on the season.

Farm lanes and field entrances

SR 39 runs north to Lizton and south toward I-70, and county roads leave Danville on every compass point. Out there are farm lanes that carry grain trucks and equipment through the winter, and house drives on five-acre lots cut out of fields. A lane that has to carry a loaded truck in January needs the full width open and the turn at the road pushed out wide, so trailer tires do not drop off the edge into the ditch.

Wind across open fields drifts those lanes back in after the snow has stopped, often worse than the storm itself. Stakes along the edges go in before the ground freezes, so the plow finds the stone under the drift. On gravel the plow rides a little high to keep the surface on the lane. Farm shops with stone aprons are plowed the same way.

The square and the older streets

Around the courthouse square the lots are older and tighter. Shops, offices and churches have small lots, walks along the street and steps at the door. Public streets are plowed by the town or, on US 36 and SR 39, by the state. The private lots, the walks and the steps are the owners' to clear, and so is the ridge the street plow leaves across a lot entrance after every pass.

On a tight lot there is no good corner for the snow, so the plan is set in the fall: which spot takes the pile, when it is hauled, and which walks and steps are salted first. Church lots are planned around service times and businesses around opening hours. The commercial snow removal contracts page explains how those agreements are written, for a single lot or several.

Neighborhoods and HOA streets

Danville grew from about 6,400 people in 2000 to more than 10,500, mostly in new neighborhoods on former fields at the edges of town. Those subdivisions have HOA entrances, common areas and mailbox clusters, and in some cases streets the association owns. The town plows public streets. What the HOA owns is the HOA's to clear, and the plat says which streets are which. Travis asks to see it first.

The board decides the trigger depth, whether the entrance is salted every time, and whether the windrow from the town plow is cleared after the street is done. Some Danville neighborhoods sit on ground that falls toward the West Fork of White Lick Creek, and there the entrance hill gets salt first. All of it goes into one seasonal agreement.

Ice, melt and where piles go

Central Indiana gets a few real snows most winters and a lot more ice than snow. On rolling ground the ice follows the water. A pile at the top of a lot or a drive melts in the sun, runs downhill across the pavement and freezes overnight in a long sheet. A pile at the bottom, or past the low edge where the melt can leave, does far less harm. That is decided before the first storm.

The other rule is to keep snow out of the ditches and culverts the drives depend on, so the melt has a way out. The contract says when salt goes down: every plowing, only on ice, or on request. It also lists where it goes. The snow removal hub for central Indiana covers the rest of the service, including sidewalks, hauling and seasonal contracts.

How a snow customer gets set up

Set up before the first snow.

You call

Call, text or send the form with the address and what needs clearing: a lot, a drive, walks, or all of it.

Travis walks it

Before the season he walks the property with you, marks curbs, drains and islands, and agrees where the snow goes.

Terms in writing

Seasonal, per push or per event, the trigger, salt and walks are written down, so nobody argues at five in the morning.

Cleared when it falls

When it snows, the property is worked in the order agreed, salted if it is in the contract, and logged.

Questions about snow work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.

Why does my sloped drive ice over after it has been plowed?

Because the melt runs down it. Whatever is left at the edges, or piled at the top, melts in the afternoon sun, runs down the grade and freezes overnight across the bottom. Pushing the snow to the low side or off the downhill end, and salting the grade and the flat at the road, stops most of it.

Who plows US 36 and SR 39 through Danville?

Both are state routes, so the state plows them. Town streets are the town's, and county roads outside town are the county's. Private drives, lanes, lots and walks are the owners' to clear, including the ridge the road plow leaves across an entrance. A contract can include a pass back through the entrance after the road is done.

Can a farm lane outside Danville be plowed for trucks?

Yes. The lane is opened to the full width the trucks need, and the turn at the road is pushed out wide so trailer tires stay off the ditch edge. On gravel the plow rides a little high to keep the stone on the lane. Edges are staked before the ground freezes, because drifts off the fields hide them.

Can a church near the square get a seasonal snow contract?

Yes. The agreement lists the lot, the walks and the steps, the trigger depth, when salt goes down, and the service times the lot has to be ready for. On a tight lot the pile spot and the hauling plan are set in the fall. Travis walks it with you and gives one figure for the season.

Is a long drive on a few acres worth a seasonal agreement?

Often, if the drive is long or sloped and somebody has to get out early. A seasonal agreement means the drive is on the route every time the trigger is reached, without a phone call. If the house can wait, calling when it snows works too. Travis talks through both when he looks at the drive.
