Snow Removal and Plowing in Zionsville, IN
Zionsville is the village, but the town limits reach well out into Eagle, Union and Perry townships, so a Zionsville address can be a long wooded drive off a county road. Snow work here is weighted that way: long private drives, HOA entrances and private streets, church lots, and the small lots near the old town center. Travis plows, salts and hauls on all of them.

Snow removal in Zionsville
Long drives through the trees
Wooded acreage off Michigan Road and across the annexed townships is the part of Zionsville most people do not picture. The houses sit well back, and the drive runs through timber, over a draw or along a ditch. Trees shade a drive, so the snow under them lasts days after the open road has melted, and branches come down with ice. A long wooded drive needs the edges staked before the ground freezes, and an eye out for limbs before the plow meets one.
Paved or stone, the plow follows the line of the drive and pushes the snow to the woods side, where it will not melt back across the surface. Shaded stretches and the slope down to a creek crossing get salt. A homeowner can call when it snows, or put the drive on a seasonal agreement so it is on the route without a call.
HOA entrances and private streets
Zionsville has a lot of neighborhoods with associations, and some have streets the association owns rather than the town. The town plows public streets. The entrance, the common drives, the mailbox clusters, the paths and any private streets are the association's to clear. The plat and the HOA documents say which streets are public. Travis asks for them before the season is priced, because the answer changes the scope a great deal.
Curving streets with wide entrances and landscaped islands are harder to plow than a straight grid. The islands, curbs, lights and landscape beds get marked in the fall, on bare ground, so the plow does not find them in the dark. The board picks the trigger depth and the salting, and one seasonal agreement covers it. The commercial snow removal contracts page covers how that is written.
Lots in the village
Around the old town center the lots are small and close together: shops, restaurants, offices and churches with tight parking, walks along the street and steps at the door. There is little room for snow, and every pile costs a parking space. The town plows the public streets. The private lots, walks and steps, and the ridge the street plow leaves at a lot entrance, are the owners' to clear.
On those lots the snow is often loaded out with the skid steer and hauled instead of piled, because the parking is worth more than the space a pile takes. Walks and entrances are salted first, before people are on them. A business or a church sets the hours the lot has to be ready in the contract, and the route is planned around them.
Town street or county road
In 2010 Zionsville annexed close to forty square miles of Eagle and Union townships, and part of Perry Township a few years later. A rural drive that looks like county ground may sit inside the town on a public town street, or outside it on a county road the county plows. Either way, the public road stops at the right of way. The drive, the apron and the turnaround past it are the owner's.
That line matters for the windrow. The road plow leaves a ridge of heavy snow across the end of every drive, and on a long rural drive it is often the deepest snow the drive gets all storm. A contract can include a pass back through the end of the drive after the road is done. It is worth deciding in the fall, not on the first snowy morning.
Ice, shade and the Eagle Creek draws
Southeast Boone County drains to Eagle Creek and its tributaries, and much Zionsville acreage has a draw, a ditch or a wet bottom crossing it. Those low spots are where a drive ices. Cold air settles there, the trees keep the sun off, and the melt from the higher ground runs down into them. Central Indiana gets a few real snows a winter and more ice than snow, and the creek crossings get the worst of it.
So salt goes where the drive dips, where it is shaded and where it climbs back out, and snow is kept out of the ditch and off the culvert at the crossing so the melt can drain. The snow removal and plowing page has the rest of the service across central Indiana, from sidewalks and salting to hauling and seasonal contracts.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Does the Town of Zionsville plow my private drive or HOA street?
No. The town plows public streets, and the county plows county roads. A private drive, an HOA entrance, the common drives, the mailbox clusters and any street the association owns are the owner's or the association's to clear. The plat and the HOA documents say which streets are public. Travis asks for them before he prices a season.
Is my rural Zionsville address on a town street or a county road?
It depends where the parcel is. Zionsville annexed large parts of Eagle and Union townships in 2010 and part of Perry Township later, so many rural addresses are now inside the town. The town or the county can tell you which. For the drive itself it makes no difference: everything past the right of way is yours.
How is a long wooded drive plowed without damage?
The edges are staked before the ground freezes, so the plow follows the drive under the snow instead of the lawn or the ditch. Low limbs and anything hanging over the drive get looked at in the fall. On stone the plow rides a little high so the surface stays on the drive. Shaded stretches and dips get salt.
Can a village business get the snow hauled instead of piled?
Yes. On a small lot near the old town center, a pile can take several parking spaces for weeks. The skid steer loads the snow into a truck and it is hauled to an agreed spot. Hauling can be part of the seasonal contract or called for after a heavy snow, and the owner decides which.
What does an HOA snow contract in Zionsville cover?
The entrance, islands, common drives, mailbox clusters, paths and any private streets, plus the trigger depth that sends the plow out, the salting and the windrow at the entrance. Curbs, lights and landscape beds are marked on bare ground in the fall. The board approves it, and Travis gives one figure for the season.
