Snow Removal and Plowing in Indianapolis, IN
On Grade works the west and northwest side of Indianapolis out of Greencastle: Speedway, Wayne Township and Pike Township, inside I-465 and out to the county line. Travis plows parking lots, warehouse aprons, church lots and subdivision drives, salts the entrances and walks, and hauls piles out when a lot runs out of room. Commercial snow removal in Indianapolis is set up as a seasonal contract written around each site.

Snow removal on the west side of Indianapolis
Who plows what in Marion County
Indianapolis and the towns inside Marion County plow the public streets. Speedway is its own town, and the interstates and state routes belong to the state. None of them touch the lot behind a store, the drive lanes of an apartment complex, the aprons at a warehouse dock or a private street in a subdivision that the HOA owns. That ground is the owner's to clear, and it is what On Grade gets called about on the west side. The first question Travis asks is where the public street ends and your pavement begins.
That line also decides where the snow goes. A city plow coming down the street leaves a ridge across the end of every drive and entrance, and that ridge is the owner's problem too. A contract on the west side usually includes a pass back through the entrances after the street has been plowed, so the windrow is not still sitting there at opening time. It is written down at the start, so nobody argues about it in the dark.
Warehouses and truck courts
The west side carries a lot of distribution and light industrial ground: along I-70 out toward the airport, along I-465, and up the I-65 and I-74 corridors on the northwest side. Those sites have truck courts, dock aprons, employee lots and long entrance drives, and trucks run on them in every kind of weather. Plowing a truck court means the dock lanes and the turning room are cleared first, then the parking, then the edges. The piles go where they block no dock, no hydrant and no sight line at the entrance.
On a big site the plow pushes, and the pile grows until there is nowhere left to put it. Then it is hauled. Travis loads piles out with the skid steer and trucks and moves them off the paved area or off the site, which gives back parking and dock room for the rest of the winter. Whether hauling is part of the season or called for when needed is a choice the owner makes in the contract.
Churches, shops and apartment lots
Lafayette Road, 38th Street, Rockville Road and West Washington Street are lined with strip centers, churches, offices and apartment complexes. Each has its own rhythm. A church lot has to be clear and salted before Sunday morning and Wednesday night, and the rest of the week it can wait. A strip center needs the storefronts and the walks open before the first tenant opens the door. An apartment complex needs the drive lanes open early, because residents leave for work around parked cars that were never moved.
Those differences go into the contract as the hours the site has to be open, the areas that come first and what gets salted. Travis plans the route around them. Parked cars, speed bumps, curb islands and the drain inlets that take the meltwater get marked during the walk-through in the fall, before the first storm hides them. The commercial snow removal contracts page lists everything an agreement like that can cover.
Speedway, Wayne and Pike neighborhoods
On the residential side, the west and northwest side has every kind of drive. Older houses on narrow lots in Speedway and Wayne Township, with short drives straight to the street. Subdivisions in Pike Township and around Eagle Creek with HOA common areas, entrances and, in some neighborhoods, streets the association owns rather than the city. Larger lots toward the county line, where the drive is longer and wind off open ground drifts it back in after the storm.
A homeowner can call when the snow is down or sign up for the season. An HOA usually wants the entrances, common drives, mailbox clusters and any private streets on one contract, with a clear rule for when the plow comes out. That rule is the trigger depth, and the HOA board decides it, not the contractor. Travis writes it into the agreement so residents know what to expect.
Ice, salt and the freeze after
Central Indiana gets a few real snows most winters and a lot more ice than snow. Freezing rain and the refreeze after a thaw are a bigger problem on a west side lot than depth. A lot that was plowed clean at noon can glaze over by evening when the meltwater from the piles runs across the pavement and the temperature drops. Where the piles sit, and which way the lot falls toward its inlets, decides where that ice forms.
Salting is written into the contract as part of every event, only on ice, or on request, and the owner chooses which areas get it: entrances, drive lanes, walks, steps and dock aprons. Inlets are kept open so the melt has somewhere to go. The snow removal and plowing page for central Indiana explains how plowing, salting, sidewalks and hauling fit together across the whole service area.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (317) 203-8928 and ask Travis, or read the guides.
Does the city plow my private parking lot or HOA street?
No. Indianapolis and the towns in Marion County plow public streets. A private lot, the drive lanes of an apartment complex, a church lot and a subdivision street the HOA owns are the owner's responsibility. If you are not sure whether your street is public or private, the HOA documents or the plat will say. Travis asks that question on the walk-through.
How is commercial snow removal in Indianapolis set up?
Usually as a seasonal contract, with the scope written down: which areas are plowed, the trigger depth that sends the plow out, when salting happens and whether hauling is included. Travis walks the site, measures it and gives one figure for the scope you choose. Estimates are free, and there are no prices on this site because every lot is different.
When should a west side business sign a snow contract?
Before the first storm, ideally in the fall. The walk-through happens on bare pavement, so curbs, islands, inlets, speed bumps and hydrants can be marked and the pile spots agreed while they can still be seen. A contract signed after the first snow is still possible, but the site is learned under snow, which is slower and harder on the curbs.
Are sidewalks and storefront entrances part of the job?
Yes, when the owner includes them. Walks, storefront entrances, church steps and building doors are cleared and salted on the same visit as the lot. They are listed separately in the contract because the walk is where people slip, and the owner decides which entrances come first.
What happens when the piles take up too much of the lot?
They are hauled. The skid steer loads the piles into trucks and the snow is moved to an agreed spot on the property or off the site. On a warehouse or retail lot that gives back parking spaces and dock room, and it stops the meltwater from the pile running across the lot and refreezing.
